Audi A3Audi A3 - The A3 has much to recommend it, but is hampered by dull road manners.
Driving : Audi admits that most A3s are sold with either a 1.9-litre or 2.0-litre TDI diesel. Sadly, these engines - particularly the former - are rough and ready. The 1.9-litre can be hesitant when pulling away and becomes coarse when extended beyond 3,500rpm. Granted, it’s not far behind Audi’s more modern 2.0-litre TDI powerplant, and it is tolerable as long as you don’t expect too much of it. But keen drivers should definitely go for the 2.0-litre - or one of the firm’s T-FSI turbo petrols. (more…)

Despite offering decent handling, the Audi’s chassis can’t offer the levels of rigidity found in BMW’s excellent 3-Series Convertible. Over rough surfaces, you can feel shake through the body, and as a result the suspension patters over imperfections - so the A4 isn’t as composed or as taut as it should be. (more…)

The Audi feels special as soon as you press the start button. A great engine is at the heart of this car’s appeal. It fires into life with a delicious V8 rumble, and sounds good on the move as well – especially when you hit the Sport button. This sharpens throttle response, improves the exhaust note and also squeezes the side bolsters of the seat more snugly! However, even without it, the RS4 delivers muscular low-down grunt; its 430Nm torque figure is substantial. A power output of 414bhp puts it on a level footing with BMW’s M3. (more…)

Audi S8Audi S8 – Pronounce the name of Audi’s flagship sport sedan as one word, “sate,” and the resulting utterance is a verb meaning to “satisfy a desire or appetite to the full.” With ten cylinders of Italian-sourced power – yep, the V-10 in this car is essentially the same engine found in the Lamborghini Gallardo but tuned differently – combined with handling upgrades, a sumptuous cabin and plenty of gadgets, it stands to reason that the Audi S8 would more than sate just about anyone lusting for performance, luxury and technology. We didn’t quite get our fill, but only because we had to give the keys back.
