Lexus IS (old) - While there were too few reports on its successor to be included, Lexus’?s first-generation IS is still keeping in touch with the top 10. There?’s no denying it is one of the best made cars on the planet. Second place in the build quality rank and seventh for reliability are great results for what?’s now a sub-£5,000 used model. But it?’s not all good news: the IS has two drawbacks: limited practicality and high running costs. With no diesel, the six-cylinder petrol engine is proving costly to keep topped up.

Lexus RX - One of the first luxury ‘SUVs’, with styling dictated more by fashion that any pretensions to off-road ability, the RX is a huge worldwide sales hit for Lexus. The edgy and distinctive look of this second-generation RX model give it head-turning appeal to better the BMW X5 class leader, while inside it’s nicely detailed and extremely well-built. Lexus SC - Lexus took a long time to introduce a flagship roadster model to its impressive range so when the SC430 arrived great things were expected from it. Powered by the super-smooth 4.3-litre V8, that also propels the LS and GS luxury saloons, mated to the slick automatic transmission of the latter car the SC430 looked like an enticing proposition.
