Lincoln MKZ Preview

Lincoln MKZ PreviewLincoln MKZ Preview - After just one year on the market, Lincoln is once again mothballing its classic “Zephyr” nameplate and affixing the moniker “MKZ” to its newest entry-luxury sedan. And please, don’t call it the M-K-Z. It’s the Mark Z – Mark after the series of luxury coupes Lincoln produced between the late 1960s and late 1990s, and Z after the Zephyr. Besides, Zephyr probably reminded too many Gen-Xers of the ill-fated Mercury family sedan of the same name that was sold during the disco era, so good riddance. But a name change is not all that’s new for the 2007 Lincoln MKZ, shown for the first time at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show.

Lincoln MKX Preview

Lincoln MKX PreviewLincoln MKX Preview - Lincoln has needed the 2007 MKX for a long time. Aimed right at the Lexus RX 330, this new crossover utility vehicle (CUV) debuted at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, and is based on the 2007 Ford Edge that was also unveiled in Detroit. Lincoln has needed the MKX because it’s the first fresh product the company has rolled into showrooms since it tackled the luxury sports sedan segment in 2000 with the rear-wheel-drive LS. But like the LS, the MKX is a me-too kind of vehicle – Lexus has played in this sandbox since 1999. Let’s just hope that, unlike with the LS, Lincoln doesn’t send the MKX to market and let it fend for itself for half a decade with no real investment in improvement to keep it competitive.

Lincoln MKS

Lincoln MKSLincoln MKS - “Reach Higher” is Lincoln’s advertising tagline, but “Reach Lower” might be more appropriate. Pitching Lincoln as a reward for people with American values who’ve achieved the American dream but don’t want to display success in a pretentious fashion, Lincoln claims no aspirations to compete on the world stage. Evidently, the view from Dearborn is that the battle for customers is in America, and that cars like the Lincoln MKS Concept are what Americans want to buy.

Lincoln Navigator

Lincoln NavigatorLincoln Navigator - The 2007 Lincoln Navigator’s new grille, which resembles an overpriced cheese grater from Sur La Table, cannot be a good idea. Look at the size of that thing, the ornate detailing, the huge garnish that wraps over the leading edge of the hood like a giant bug deflector – heck, we half expected shreds of cheddar to dangle from the Navigator’s toothy new face. 2006 Lincoln Zephyr

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

Lincoln was only selling expensive luxury cars, to an older, established clientele. New, younger buyers were needed. And so the Zephyr, a smaller, less-expensive but still luxurious Lincoln was born. In 1936.
